What is an M2 SSD – M.2, pronounced m dot two in English and previously known as Next Generation Form Factor, is a specification for internally installed computer peripheral expansion cards and connectors associated with M.2, replacing the standard mSATA layout and a physical card connector of the PCI Express Mini Card type.

SSD M.2 or M2 is one type of SSD (solid-state drive) that has a rectangular shape with very fast speed. These SSDs are generally faster but these SSDs have a price that will be more expensive compared to the usual 2.5 inch SSD. Many thin laptops are now using M.2 SSDs because they are not as big as 2.5-inch SSDs or hard drives, which we usually find in large squares. This M.2 SSD is available up to 2TB of storage. But this can still be classified as a small size when compared to the 2.5 HDD or SSD capacity sold in the market in general. To use this M.2 SSD on a desktop or laptop computer, you only need a motherboard using the M.2 slot. Some motherboards have two or more of these M.2 slots, to allow you to run the SSD in the RAID section.

2 Types of M.2 SSD: SATA and NVMe

  1. M.2 SATA SSD

SATA-based SSDs are the lowest class of SSDs in terms of performance and share the same interface as hard drives. However, these SATA-based SSDs have three to four times more bandwidth than spinning disk hard drives.
  2. SSD M.2 NVMeThe M.2 NVMe SSD uses the NVMe protocol which was purposely designed specifically for this SSD. When connected to this PCIe bus, NVMe SSDs offer a new level of performance and speed and of course quality that can be easily obtained. This NVMe SSD communicates directly with the system CPU using the PCIe socket portion. Basically, this type of SSD allows flash memory to operate as an SSD directly through the PCIe socket without having to use a communication driver from SATA which is much slower in performance and speed than the new NVMe.

That’s what I can say to all of you, for more and less I apologize, see you in the next article.
