What is Bitbucket? Bitbucket is a web-based hosting service for source code and project development using Mercurial. You can also use Atlassian’s Git version control system. Bitbucket also offers commercial and free account plans. It was launched in 2008 and uses the Python programming language.

The free account may also offer an unlimited number of repository services which can have 5 users per team for free accounts as of September 2010. Bitbucket it also integrates with other Atlassian software such as Jira, HipChat, Confluence and also Bamboo.

Bitbucket was also previously an independent startup founded by Jesper Nøhr. On September 29, 2010, Bitbucket has been acquired by Atlassian. Initially Bitbucket only offered hosting support on Mercurial projects. On October 3, 2011, Bitbucket officially announced that it provides support for Git. In March 2015 the code snippet was released and it simply provides a way to share code snippets with yourself or others.

The original symbol on the bucket sticker was the alchemical symbol as well as the planetary symbol for Mercury. And refers to the hosting repository Bitbucket Mercurial. The contents in the blue bucket are metallic mercury. Bitbucket also announced that it has reached 5 million developers from 900,000 teams in September 2016. The features commonly used by Bitbucket is to offer free private access for a maximum of 5 users. Another advantage can be used on a private Repository for up to five users which is absolutely free.
