What is Mac OS Sierra – Mac OS Sierra (version 10.12) is the thirteenth major release of Mac OS (formerly known as OS X and Mac OS X), Apple Inc.’s desktop and server operating system. The name “Mac OS” comes from the intention to unify the name of the operating system with the names iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. The Sierra is named after the Sierra Nevada mountains in California and Nevada. The main new features concern Continuity, iCloud, and windowing, as well as support for Apple Pay and Siri.

Sierra is the first version of Mac OS since OS X Mountain Lion, released in 2012, that doesn’t run on all computers that supported earlier versions. Developers have come up with a workaround to install Mac OS Sierra on some Mac computers which are no longer officially supported as long as they are packed with CPUs that support SSE4.1. This requires using a patch to modify the installation image.

Mac OS Sierra tweaked Gatekeeper’s user interface slightly and added two new mechanisms. The new default in System Preferences hides the “Anywhere” option which allows users to disable the mechanism and run programs from any source without needing to approve each new one individually.

The first new mechanism allows developers to code-sign disk images that can be verified as units by the system. This allows developers to guarantee the integrity of external files distributed with application bundles on the same disk image. Attackers can infect these external files with malicious code and with them exploiting vulnerabilities in applications, without having to break the signature of the application bundle itself.
