What is AMD Pinnacle Ridge – Pinnacle Ridge is the code name for AMD’s mainstream line of high-end desktop microprocessors (HEDT) based on the Zen+ microarchitecture that serves as the successor to Summit Ridge. The Pinnacle Ridge processor is built on the 12 nm GlobalFoundries process and introduces a number of improvements over its predecessor.
The Pinnacle Ridge processor is a refresh of Summit Ridge, built on an improved process to provide simple frequency bumping. The processor is a complete system on chip with northbridge and southbridge on-die. The Pinnacle Ridge chip offers 16 PCIe lanes (generally for the GPU) along with four additional PCIe lanes for SATA and four USB 3.0 links. The processor uses Socket AM4 and can be extended in functionality with the Socket AM4 chipset which provides support for additional resources (i.e., more PCIe lanes and USB ports).

AMD launched their Ryzen CPUs with reports on their next CPU architecture already in. According to AMD’s own multi-generation roadmap, the company indicates that the Zen will be followed up by the Zen 2 and Zen 3 which will feature additional performance improvements, new features, and IPC gains over the current Zen core revision.
AMD already had a staggering 52% jump in IPC (Instruction Per Cycle) with their Zen architecture so we can expect further gains (5% – 15%) with the Zen follow-up. AMD hasn’t gone into much detail about the Zen 2 architecture but their CEO, Lisa Su, confirmed in the AMA Reddit that they have a big team working on it until now so it should hit the market and they have a list of things to add to the Zen 2 and Zen 3 that will get more improvements from this high-performance core.
