What is iGPU – Integrated graphics processing unit (IGPU), Integrated graphics, shared graphics solution, integrated graphics processor (IGP) or integrated memory architecture (UMA) uses a portion of the computer system RAM rather than dedicated graphics memory. The IGP can be integrated into the motherboard as part of the chipset (northbridge), or on the same die (integrated circuit) as the CPU (such as an AMD APU or Intel HD Graphics). On certain motherboards, AMD’s IGP may use dedicated sideport memory. This is a separate fixed block of high-performance memory dedicated to use by the GPU. In early 2007, computers with integrated graphics accounted for about 90% of all PC shipments.

iGPUs are cheaper to implement than dedicated graphics processing, but tend to be less capable. Historically, integrated processing was deemed unfit for playing 3D games or running graphics-intensive programs but could run less-intensive programs like Adobe Flash. Examples of such IGPs are offerings from SiS and VIA circa 2004. However, modern integrated graphics processors such as the AMD Accelerated Processing Unit and Intel HD Graphics are more than capable of handling 2D graphics or low voltage 3D graphics.

Since GPU computing is very memory intensive, integrated processing may find itself competing with the CPU for relatively slow system RAM, as it has minimal or no dedicated video memory. An IGP can have a memory bandwidth of up to 29,856 GB/s of system RAM, while a graphics card may have up to 264 GB/s of bandwidth between its RAM and GPU core. This memory bus bandwidth can limit GPU performance, although multi-channel memory can mitigate this shortcoming. Older integrated graphics chipsets lacked hardware transformations and lighting, but newer ones do.

That’s a brief understanding of iGPU from me, hopefully this article can help those of you who are looking for information about iGPU. That’s all from me, sorry if there are any wrong words from me as the author of this article and thank you for taking the time to visit the articles I made and for visiting our my method website.
