What is PNG

[ad_1]

What is PNG – PNG stands for Portable Network Graphic, a type of raster image file. This is a very popular file type with web designers because it can handle graphics with transparent or semi-transparent backgrounds. The file format is not patented, so you can open PNG using any image editing software without the need for a license. PNG files, which use the .png extension, can handle 16 million colors which definitely sets them apart from most file types.

The PNG image format was launched in 1995. IT expert Oliver Fromme came up with the name PING, which was later shortened to PNG. PNG is the next evolution of the GIF format, which had been around for eight years when PNG was first launched. GIFs have some drawbacks, such as requiring a patent license and a limited range of only 256 colors, which doesn’t keep up with the ever-increasing resolution of computer screens. To avoid this problem, PNG files are made patent-free and include a much larger color palette. PNG, in contrast to GIF, is a single image format they don’t support animation.

Almost all built-in image editing programs can open PNG files. Whether you are using a Mac or Windows computer, simply find the file name and double click on it. You can then select the program you want to use from the list of options that your computer gives you. All major web browsers can also open PNGs, including Chrome, Edge, and Safari. To view it, simply drag and drop the PNG file from the desktop into your browser.

Unlike GIFs, regular PNGs do not allow animation. In 2001, PNG developers came up with a new animation-friendly format called Multiple-image Network Graphic (MNG). But with GIFs remaining the more popular animated files, MNGs failed to gain widespread popularity.
