Google provides an Android version of Authenticator,[3] BlackBerry, and iOS. The official open-source fork of the Android app is available on GitHub. However, this Fork has not been updated since 2020. Likewise, for older versions of the Google Authenticator app for iOS and BlackBerry, the source code is also freely available. However this source code also hasn’t been updated for years.

To use Authenticator, the app is first installed on the smartphone. This has to be set up for each site that the site will use to provide users with a shared secret key via a secure channel, to be stored in the Authenticator app. This secret key will be used for all future logins to the site.

To sign in to a site or service that uses two-factor authentication and supports Authenticator, the user provides a username and password to the site. The site then calculates (but does not display) the required six-digit one-time password and prompts the user to enter it. The user runs the Authenticator application, which independently calculates and displays the same password, which the user types, authenticating their identity so that not everyone can freely log in for the security of your account.
