What is Stock – Stock is a unit of equity ownership in a company. When establishing a company, owners can choose to issue common stock or preferred stock to investors. Companies issue equity shares to investors in exchange for capital, which is used to grow and operate the company.

Unlike debt capital, which is obtained through borrowing or issuing bonds, equities have no legal mandate to be paid back to investors, and stocks, while they can pay dividends as a distribution of profits, do not pay interest. Almost all companies, from small partnerships or LLC’s to multinational corporations, issue some type of stock.
